Course programme
The core curriculum of PGDM develops essential skills and knowledge in the areas of economics, organisation and behaviour, finance and accounting, management control, marketing, human resource management, information systems and quantitative methods.
After successfully completing the first year requirements, the students undertake summer training of up to ten weeks at the managerial level. Students analyse and offer solutions to specific managerial problems under the guidance of a faculty member as well as a manager in the host company.
Second year students structure their studies to suit their aptitude and interest. They usually develop one or two major areas of expertise by selecting courses from the 60 to 80 electives that the Institute typically offers. Students willing to delve deeper into a topic that is not covered by the elective courses can do a term paper under faculty supervision.
The method of instruction varies. Case studies, lectures, group and individual exercises, class projects, student presentations, simulation games etc., are used in different courses. Many courses bring in industry experts to integrate classroom learning with industry practice.
Information Systems (IS) provides information support to managerial decision-making. It is crucial for effective implementation of the planning and control functions in an organization. Recently, because of the growing capabilities and increasing availability of computer-based tools and communication technologies, IS plays a key role in the formulation and implementation of corporate strategies.
Use of IS and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools in business processes is now a commonplace. It is imperative for future managers to thoroughly understand the IS concepts and the ICT tools, realize their benefits and risks, and plan and manage them effectively.
MIS group endeavors to develop precisely these capabilities among students by offering a balanced mix of courses in 'planning and managing of IS' and 'fundamental understanding of ICT'. The first year courses familiarize students with the basics of computers, communications, databases and popular application packages. For PGDCM, compulsory courses on 'Software Tools', 'Data Structures', 'IS Development', 'Software Project Management', and 'Networking' and others are offered.
Electives on 'Strategic Management of IT', 'Information Economy', 'Neural Networks', and 'Fuzzy Systems' help develop skills in strategic decision making. While 'DBMS' and 'Knowledge Discovery' discuss database and data mining applications to IS, 'Network Management and Security', 'ICT for Development', and 'E-Commerce' provide thorough understanding of ICT and related applications.
Students get substantial exposure to modern technologies, as the Institute has a wide range of modern computing facilities.
