POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING

Objective - This course familiarizes the students with the nature and process of counseling, its major theories and techniques and exposes them to the different fields of application of counseling.

PAPER-I

Introduction to Counseling:

(a) Meaning, purpose and goals of counseling with special reference to India, Historical Perspective. (b) Professional Issues: Education and Training of counselor, ethical considerations in counseling. (c) Counseling Process

Techniques of Appraisal for Counseling

(a) Non Testing Techniques – Autobiography, Observation, Anecdotal Records, Cumulative Records, Case-study, Interviews and Q-sort techniques. (b) Testing Techniques: Nature and Characteristics of Psychological Tests. Tests: Reliability, Validity, Objectivity, Norms and Profiles. Assessment of Personality: Projective & Non-projective techniques Assessment of Intelligence: Group and Individual tests, Verbal and Non-verbal tests, Speed and Power tests. Assessment of Aptitude and Interests.

PAPER-II

Approaches to Counseling

(a) Psychodynamic Approach: Freudian & Neo Freudian. (b) Humanistic- Existential Approach: Client Centered, Existential. (c) Cognitive Approach: Rational Emotive, Transactional Analysis. (d) Behavioral Approach: Operant Conditioning, Behavior Modification. (e) Indian Approach: Basic Principles of Yoga and Meditation.

PAPER III

Counseling Applications Family Counseling (Marital and Adolescent Counseling), Counseling in Schools, Counseling of exceptional groups (delinquents, Alcohol and drug addicts), and Career Counseling.

Unit-II Distinction between neurotic and psychotic disorders Definition, Symptoms and etiology of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Definition, symptoms and etiology of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Nature, symptoms, types and etiology of Phobic Anxiety Disorder , Nature, types and etiology of Dissociative Disorder.
