SELECT - Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems
-
I am an islander from Jamaica. I am quite interested in sustainability, not only on an environmental point of view but also in terms of the business aspects such economic, social and environmental impacts involved in establishing companies. Aside from this I enjoy the dynamic experience of meeting different people and travelling which SELECT has definitely given me the opportunity to do. For the most part my expectations were met; however, there were some courses which were a bit basic and quite general. Additionally, I would have preferred if there were more courses that we could have done with other students who were studying similar courses instead of having a few of the tailored courses at KTH.

The master's programme in Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) offers advanced education in the field of sustainable energy systems for the future. SELECT aims at delivering education for high competency and quality engineering skills in the field, including industrial interaction throughout the programme. SELECT starts from the concept of basic renewable energy sources (sun, wind, geothermal) and considers the pathways towards a future sustainable energy system. The SELECT curriculum rests on a strong foundation in thermal sciences, emphasising the thermodynamic tools of exergy and thermoeconomic analysis.

Course programme
SELECT is a cooperation between seven universities and their associated industry partners. The programme contains a mandatory mobility between year 1 and year 2 and students spend the first two semesters at KTH, UPC or TU/e on courses in sustainable energy conversion, renewable energy and environmental pathways. This is then followed by a specialisation at Aalto, PoliTo, IST, AGH, TU/e, KTH or UPC in year 2.
The second year of studies includes the MSc thesis project often in an industrial setting in common supervision with researchers from any of the participating universities.
The programme offers extended industrial contacts integrated throughout the whole programme, and especially as part of internships and seminars/workshops. The curriculum is highly integrated, first of all regarding to student and teacher mobility for certain common lectures, but also related to the extended use of remote teaching by the specialist teachers at all seven universities, in conjunction with “face-to-face” and “virtual” interactive workshops and project courses. The programme offers a unique, modern and highly interactive learning material which enhances the student learning process.
