The 2-day HDFF designed Stay Safe Skills Training "Hostage Incident Management" (HIM) is a course aiming to give participants a focused insights into hostage situations, both from the perspective of the hostage and the management. This intensive training includes scenario-based training for management instruction as well as media management and applied exercises for hostage situations. HIM follows IFRC and other international regulations in the management of this kind of incidents.

Hostage Incident Management

This workshop will help participants to be aware of measures to prevent hostage situations. It will provide situations from the perspectives of hostages and the management team. How will you manage a victim’s “Golden Hour”? What can you do to improve kidnapping policies?

You will learn:

The stages of HIM

Comparison of international policy, state policy, and your organization’s policy

How to examine country profiles and prepare your staff

What is the First Response in HIM?

Who do you contact in media? Do you have a media strategy?

Maintain the morale and momentum of your team and the victims’ families

The Recovery stage

The training will also provide an interactive scenario for the participants. A situation will be provided and within the guidelines of your organization, you must work with members of diverse backgrounds and experience to successfully manage the hostage situation.

All sessions will be facilitated by a combination of HDFF trainers, as well as key professionals in the security and humanitarian sector.

Additional information

More than just security assessment or risk evaluation, HDFF instructs staff on project planning and design, budgeting, problem analysis, and other management skills.  HDFF has worked with participants from UNOPS, Oxfam, World Vision, Save the Children, Plan International, and more.  Many NGOs offer assistance to provide their employees with proper training in their career, so HDFF also provides an Early Bird Discount to those who register for the program.
