Overview
The Sun Java Enterprise System 2005Q1: Core Concepts course provides a technical introduction to the Sun Java Enterprise System. The course describes the technologies and standards related to each product area. Technologies covered include directory, web, messaging, calendaring, instant messaging, portal, identity, and high availability. The course describes the basic architecture and key functions of the server products that are part of the Sun Java Enterprise System. Course lab work includes installation of most of the server products and simple administration tasks. Please Note: Sun has recently rebranded its popular Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) product line under the Sun Java System brand. You may see references to either name within the course description and course materials.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
· Describe the basic architecture and key functions of the Sun Java Enterprise System (2005 Quarter 1)
· Describe the technologies and standards related to each Sun Java Enterprise System component
· Install and perform basic administration tasks for the following component products:

· Sun Java System Directory Server
· Sun Java System Web Server
· Sun Java System Application Server

· Sun Java System Instant Messaging

NOTE: The remaining Sun Java Enterprise System components include: Sun Java System Directory Proxy Server, Sun Cluster and Sun Java System Sun Remote Services (SRS) Net Connect. These components are described and discussed. However, the course does not provide labs for them.

PreRequisites

To succeed fully in this course, students should have:
· Working familiarity with the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS)
· Some technical background with an understanding of terminology such as internet, browser, intranet, UNIX, process, central processing unit (CPU), storage, protocol, internet protocol (IP) address, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name Server (DNS), firewall, DMZ, and proxy
· System and network administration classes, or sufficient experience, although not mandatory for success in this class, may be useful to build a technical background in order to follow this course's material comfortably
