Potential for Growth
The private airlines presently account for around 75% share of the domestic aviation market being the result of liberalization of the Indian Aviation Industry. The Industry has transformed to privately owned airlines and low-cost carriers from being primarily a Govt. owned Industry. Indian carriers currently have a fleet size of 310 aircrafts, but have 480 aircrafts on order, scheduled for delivery by 2012.
India has jumped to 9th position in world's aviation market from 12th in 2006. The scheduled domestic air services are now available from 82 airports as against 75 in 2006. According to recent estimates by The International Air Transport Association (IATA), India is likely to be a significant player in the global civil aviation business, which was estimated at US$ 5.6 billion in 2008. The Indian Civil Aviation market grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18%, and was worth US$ 5.6 billion in 2008. The government plans to invest US$ 9 billion to modernise existing airports by 2010.
