Ph.d. Programs in Linguistics offered by the Department extends for a minimum period of two years from the date of confirmation of admission to a maximum of five years. The nature of research is individually decided by each candidate and a dissertation on an approved topic under faculty guidance.
The Department of Linguistics, North Eastern Hill University created as a Research Centre in Nagaland in 1984, established itself as a full-fledged department with Post-Graduate Programs from 1996 at Shillong. The North East represents one of the most complex linguistic settings in the Indian sub-continent where several genetically related but often mutually unintelligible languages belonging to Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asiatic languages are spoken.
