Course programme

M.Phil in Study of Regional Development

This Centre was conceived as a nucleus for teaching and research in to the process of development - specifically, research in to the nature and policies towards unevenness in the level of development of different regions of India.

Differentiation among regions in terms of natural resource base; population pressure, infrastractural facilities, socio cultural attributes of the inhabitants; economic factors, particularly capital formation, and historical specificities, are some of the ingredients which go to influence the level of prosperity of regions within a nation.

The complexities of interaction among these factors cannot be adequately probed without looking at them in a comprehensive multi- dimensional framework. Therefore, right from the outset, the objective was to develop within this Centre an inter-disciplinary programme of research and teaching, whose focus would be on an analysis of issues pertaining to spatial planning with particular emphasis on the problems of underdevelopment of backward regions. This was the broad perspective which was kept in view by the founding members of this Centre at the time of its establishment in 1970, shortly after the Jawaharlal Nehru University was set up in 1969.

Those who helped to chalk out the original format of this Centre of learning were Dr. P.S. Lokanathan, Professor V.M. Dandekar and Professor Moonis Raza, among other academic luminaries drawn from different disciplines. It is with this background of the genesis of the Centre that during the course of its subsequent evolution it has brought together a faculty belonging to the fields of Geography, Economics and Demography, as also Earth Sciences and Statistics, which in all totals an effective strength of twenty-two.

The Centre offers curricular and research programmes at the undergraduate, M.A. and M.Phil/Ph.D levels. For several years during nineteen seventies and early eighties, the Centre also conducted a course on State Level Planning for the in-service personnel of the Union andthe State Government. A research degree in Demography, namely Master of Population Studies, was initiated in 1974 and continued for the next five years, after which it was merged with the M.Phil programme of the Centre.
